Welcome to the 2009 Blog Party!

Every year I meet new neat people, and I’m so happy you’re stopping by to visit.

This blog is about stories, writing, and ideas.

It’s also the story of me writing my first novel.

Based on a little-known folktale, it’s the story of a young woman who risks marrying a “beast” in order to escape her abusive step-mother.  She disenchants a good man, but her happily-ever-after is interrupted when her new husband must undertake a quest, leaving her alone to face new monsters.

I’m fascinated with getting inside other people’s heads and figuring out how they think; it’s one of my favorite things about noveling.  Perhaps as a result I am very transparent with my own thought processes and that’s what ends up on this blog: “Thinking out-loud.”

This week I’ve got a line-up of posts to  give you a survey of how I think, a bit of the variety I cover, and a book or two to sign up for each day of the party.  (I collect and share books constantly.)

  • Writing advice for the beginning novelist (and did you ever wonder the difference between blogging and writing a book?)
    • Giving away Bird by Bird
  • A question I had to work out for my own novel
    • Giving away two of my favorite fairy tale novelizations
  • A comparison of old and new tellings of traditional tales
    • Giving away a book of tales and a small folklore encyclopedia
  • And more– (including my favorite advice for moms)– something new each day with a corresponding book giveaway

So if a patchwork of ideas interests you (and/or you want to check out the daily posts for a new book or two) stop back by.

Sign-ups for the giveaways start Saturday the 21st: I was initially allowing four days to sign up for each selection, but a friend more experienced in giveaways said I ought to allow at least a week, so that’s what you’ll have:  One week to sign-up for each book (I’ll post the winner at the bottom of the comments when each sign-up closes.)

The links along the top and sides will tell you all you need to know about me and Untangling, and give you a fair idea of the forest you have stumbled into.

I hope you enjoy your time here,

  1. Hi Amy,
I’m working on my first novel as well. I hope I can find someone who will publish it in this economy since I’ve got no prior published work to recommend me. Good luck with yours!

  2. Hi! So nice to meet you. I wish you all the best on your novel. Though I am not a writer, I am an avid reader. Party on!

  3. Hi Amy!!! I’m baaacckk! I’ve been party hopping for the last hour or so. I’m off to get a hamburger though.

I hate keeping folks in suspense! But at least I didn’t tell them what each post was going to be. Anyway, I’m starved, and I need to edit a podcast.

  4. Just going from party to party to see how others are doing this blogging thing.

My prize is #115 check it out!
Have a good weekend blog partyn’!

  5. A novel is a huge accomplishment! Congrats! Hope you are having fun at the party. I would also like to invite you to link to Show off your Blog Saturday! I would love to read your favorite post! It not too late feel free to link!

  6. Hello! Poppin’ in from The Ultimate Blog Party…all the way from Queensland, Australia! G’Day! I hope you have time to visit my party soon.

    Ta!

I want to invite you to the Mommie Daze Virtual Baby Shower that I am hosting May 15 to June 8. This is an international even and there are prizes! Stop by my blog for all the details.

  7. Wow that is wonderful that you wrote a novel. I love to read. I am definitely not a writer. That is a wonderful talent.
Have fun at the Blog Party!

  8. Hello! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I enjoyed reading a few links in your sidebar about homemaking and 40 reasons to have children.

You asked about the appeal of the spring reading challenge. With this particular one, people post a list of books they are planning to read at the beginning, and then at the end they post what they read or didn’t read, what they enjoyed or learned, etc. Some post book reviews along the way, and Katrina, the hostess, has a place on her site to link up to those. The appeal is in finding other book recommendations and discussing books that I’ve read that others have also and comparing notes. We don’t keep up with each other along the way so much, unless we read the reviews — it’s mainly just visiting around the other participants and the beginning and the end. This kins of thing is making my TBR list a mile long. :-)

  9. I just stopped by, blog hopping as part of UBP 2009. It is very nice to meet you. I have a blog at http://www.superfunmama.blogspot.com; It’s a toddler learning blog. I’d love to have you for a visit! I am loving UBP! Have a magical day. I have a goal of trying to visit 150 blogs per day, whew! Let’s hope the little one takes long naps for the next few days.

  10. What a neat blog! I would someday like to write a book, so I’m sure I’ll be checking out more of your site. Have a great day!

  11. Thanks for stopping by place and thanks for the words of encouragement!!!

It’s nice to know that there are more people out there in the universe that share some of the same interests. I checked out your side link on waking up earlier and am definitely am going to have to give that a try since I’m always tired it actually sounds like common sense but commons sense isn’t always common :)

I’ve always wanted to be a novelist and have been contemplating it for years now, and I think you just compelled me to do just that, Thanks!

  12. Hello! You stopped by my blog and (it took a few days) but I’m stopping by yours! Cool place you have here. I’ve looked thru a few of your posts, I’ll have to browse a bit more. And speaking of browsing. . . as it goes up here, we are neighbors! Let’s chat a bit more sometime.

  13. I’m still just blog hopping through the Ultimate Blog Party link list. I didn’t want to miss out on any blogs… but I just ran out of party time. So… I’m still working my way down the list… even though the party is technically over.
Stop in on my blog if you’ve got a minute! Or… if you’re still up for a party post… you could stop by my party anytime!
